Inn of Court

Our Michigan IP Inn has been invited by the Richard Linn Inn, along with the Indy IP Inn, to join the team and participate in this fun event to help raise money. If interested, please contact the Linn Inn Executive Director, Olivia Bedi (obedi@nge.com).


The Richard Linn Inn offers the Mark T. Banner Scholarship, a $10,000 scholarship to a deserving, diverse law student who is focused in IP and has a financial need. See their website for Information about the Scholarship (http://www.linninn.org/Pages/scholarship.shtml).

2018-2019 Meeting Dates

  • January 22, 2019 – Program 2 (5:00 pm). Location: Iroquois Club, 43248 Woodward Ave., Bloomfield Hills, MI 48302

Program: “Just whose side are you on, anyway?”

This program will address various ethical issues from the perspective of an IP attorney from first meeting to the end of the relationship. Situations will focus on moments when the client’s interests diverge from the attorney’s interest.

  • March 5, 2019 – Program 3 (5:00 pm). Location: Detroit Golf Club, 17911 Hamilton Rd., Detroit, MI 48203

Program: Quiz Bowl (March 5, 2019)

Pupilage teams will participate in a Quiz Bowl involving questions relating to law, ethics, general trivia, the history of Detroit and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, as well as Inn related questions. Extra bonus points will be awarded to those groups answering specific questions about their pupilage team members’ background. Prizes will be awarded to the top three groups.

  • April 17, 2019 – Program 4 (5:00 pm). Location: Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse (Detroit Room), 231 W. Lafayette Blvd., Detroit, MI 48226

Program: IP History in the Eastern District of Detroit (April 17, 2019)

This program will begin with a history of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan provided by Court Historian Judy Christie. A number of famous IP cases originating from our District will be profiled, including Caraco v. Novo Nordisk, KSR v. Teleflex, GM v. Devex, and others

  • May 16, 2019 – Annual Dinner (5:00 pm). Location: Birmingham Country Club, 1750 Saxon Drive., Birmingham, MI 48009

Michigan IP Inn of Court has been awarded the “Platinum” Achieving Excellence

The Achieving Excellence program recognizes Inns for effective practices in five core competencies: administration, communications, programs, mentoring, and outreach.

This honorable distinction, awarded to only 1 in 4 Inns nationwide, is a testament to our Inn’s leadership for the past 5 years and the diligence of our members. Congratulations! And many thanks to President Bill Abbatt and President-Elect Eric Dobrusin, who fervently advocated on our behalf for this recognition.

The Michigan Intellectual Property Inn is comprised of practicing attorneys, judges, and students. There are four categories of active membership, (1) Masters, (2) Barristers, (3) Associates and (4) Students. Total active membership (i.e., all categories of membership other than Honorary and Emeritus Members) shall be approximately 80-100.

The Michigan Intellectual Property Inn of Court was founded in September 2012 and is a part of the Richard Linn Inn Alliance.
